So what's all this about?
Hi there! Just wanted to create a Q&A that briefly explains the changes I have been experiencing this recent year. I hope this is helpful for you and if you have more questions, please comment below and I'll answer them!
Did you find a job out of the country?
Yes and no. I am working with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship which is officially a non-profit organization in the US. However, I will be working as a Link staff sent to Chile for 2 years.
Seems like you were traveling a lot this year, is it all related?
Yes it is related! Towards the end of 2018 I was able to go to Urbana Missions conference where I learned about the Link ministry of InterVarsity. Before going to Urbana I had planned a trip to Chile to spend time with family. It was after this trip that I saw the way God was connecting the dots and inviting me to participate in the work happening in Chile. Once I began the application and was accepted to Link, I went to a 2 week training in Madison, WI. A few days later, I was on a plane headed to South Africa for the IFES World Assembly (you can read more about that in a previous post). Lastly, I went to Jacksonville, FL for the staff conference of the Florida region. Although I won't be working here in Florida, it was helpful in providing relevant training for my time in Chile and my volunteering in Miami for the meantime.
Are you still working as an accountant?
No I am not. Currently, I am working part-time in the family business and selling things on OfferUp. This is mainly for my current sustenance. I am also volunteering with the InterVarsity chapter at FIU. Because I still have ties to the current student leadership, I am giving a few hours to help them with tabling on campus and providing biweekly discipleship. Apart from that, a good portion of my time is spent sharing with others about the work I will be doing in Chile and inviting them (and you) to participate with prayers and finances.
So are you getting paid for working with college students in Chile?
I will but not in the same way as in a traditional job. Like in many other Christian organizations, as a staff I am responsible to do "support raising". That means I rely on the donations of others as payment for the work I will be doing in Chile. The total I raise includes all the costs any employer would have to pay for an employee, my salary, training, and ministry costs. That can be anything from travel expenses to printing flyers for an event. Why all this talk of moving but you're still in Miami?
As mentioned in the last question, I am responsible for raising support before going to work. That means, if I don't have full support, I can't leave. So each time you see me, it's a reminder that there's still financial ways you can participate. It's a group effort, help me get to destination!
